Earth.
The Blue Planet.
The
Water Planet.
Two-thirds of our planet's surface is covered with water.
The
problem is that 97% of the world's water is salt water in the oceans,
and only 3% is fresh water.
Of
this tiny fraction, only one-third of 1% is usable by humans-
the rest is locked in polar icecaps, or is deep underground. Fresh
water is our most valuable and precious resource.
And
then there's Australia. Australia, the driest inhabited continent
on Earth. With major cites and regional centres running short of
fresh water- imposing water restrictions; raising the price of water;
facing the costs (both economic and environmental) of building new
dams.
Today,
more and more Australians are realising that we need to take personal
responsibility in the area of water usage.
They
know that we need to cut down the amount of water we waste, increase
the amount we recycle, and increase the amount of rainwater we collect,
store and use.
Our
country cousins have known all this for generations. Now we urban
dwellers, particularly in Canberra, are catching up!

Today,
ACT and many State and local governments around Australia are offering
households rebates to install water tanks. EFP supplies water tanks
by Tankmasta,
Nylex,
Aquasource
and Team
Poly.
New
urban water tank products have been developed by Aquasource
to flush toilets and supply washing machines with water, which produces
large water savings from comparatively small tanks. The Aquasource
Plus kit can be fitted to any water tank/s, and supply anything
from one toilet, to a whole house.
The
unique SmartFLO
leafless guttering helps produce the highest quality water from
roofs, while virtually eliminating cleaning and fire risk.
Forward-thinking,
budget-conscious people are also fitting water-saving AAA showerheads
such as E-co
Shower, and flow reduction valves to their homes.
We've
been surprised at the number of people looking for a good grey water
reuse system. The logic is there- the average home sends well over
100,000 litres of usable water down the drain each year. Affordable
units such as the eco-Care
Grey Water System are allowing people to keep their gardens
and lawns alive, and saving a huge amount of drinking-quality water.
As
a country, we're also realising that we waste a lot of energy. Waste
that produces huge quantities of greenhouse gas. We're not only
blowing a lot of greenhouse gasses, we're also blowing a lot of
money!
Advanced
evacuated tube solar systems such as Hills
Solar (formally
Endless Solar), and heat pump solar hot water systems like Quantum
save the average local family some $300 a year, and save 3-4 tonnes
of greenhouse gas emissions.
The
Australian, and many State Governments now provide large subsidies
to encourage householders to adopt solar and heat pump hot water
heating.
Government
regulation of new home building is accelerating the trend to more
water and energy-efficient homes. New regulations in Victoria mandate
a 5-star standard, plus either a solar hot water system, or a water
tank. In NSW, the BASIX system has been introduced, which requires
a 40% reduction in average water use, and a 25% reduction in greenhouse
emissions.
