The Brilliant
DraftStoppa
Energy Saver for
Exhaust Fans

How can we save on heating bills in Winter, and cooling bills in Summer?

It's not very clever. We spend a lot of money insulating our house- maybe thousands of dollars on all sort of measures to cut down our heating and cooling bills. Floor insulation, wall insulation, ceiling insulation, double-glazed windows etc. etc. For all the steps that we've taken to improve the energy efficiency of our homes, there are a couple of gaping holes in our measures. Literally. And they're buring up our money.

In the kitchen, we almost certainly have an exhaust fan. Most likely it's just vented into the roof cavity. In the bathrooms/s, we almost certainly have an bathroom exhaust fan/Tastic/equivalent. Most likely these are just vented into the ceiling. Both are roibbing us blind!

In summer, the air in our roof is very hot. This hot air can flow unimpeded through our exhaust fans/Tastics into the house. Then we pay for cooling this hot air. Not clever, Jan.

In wintertime, we pay a small fortune to heat the house, but cooler air from the ceiling can pour down into the house. We then pay a lot of money to heat this air. Not clever, Jan.

How big a problem? Some recent testing * showed that you could be paying to heat almost 50 cubic metres of air an hour through just one exhaust fan cavity.

How expensive a solution? The DraftStoppa costs just $35, and can be fitted in almost no time by the home handyman. We can post it to you anywhere!

How does it work?

  • The ‘DraftStoppa’ prevents cool or warm air escaping to or entering from the roof cavity.

  • The ‘DraftStoppa’ is simple to install and opens and closes effortlessly without loading-up your ceiling exhaust fans motor.
  • The DraftStoppa will not work with units that vent directly to an opening via a duct. Check out the new combined ducted exhaust fan/DraftStoppa -Top Hat.

DraftStoppa Installation Instructions

*Testing by Complex Air Conditioning Pty Ltd as reviewed by the Victorian Sustainable Energy Authority indicates that in areas where ceiling fans are in use this adds up to an energy saving of up to 30%.

Test results concluded that in winter conditions with an outside temperature of 1oC and an average internal room 10m x 4m x 2.7m – volume 108m3, and an ambient internal temperature of 15.5o C , the cold air inflow from the roof cavity through an unsealed fan into the room was measured at 13 litres / second.

This means that in every hour 46.8m3 of cold air would have entered the room and the total volume of warm air would be replaced every 2 hours and 20 minutes at a huge reheating cost.
