Peugeot 508 HYbrid4: Fuel-Efficiency With
A Touch of Class

The Peugeot 508, originally released in 2010, is a large family sedan. Although it does have a petrol engine option, it's fuel-efficiency credentials are established by the diesel models.

Peugeot Record Car Fuel Efficiency In Australia

Peugeot has an excellent background in fuel efficiency in Australia. They are the proud holder of two Guinness World Records for fuel economy, both set using HDi diesel technology in the tough Australian conditions.

Their first world record, for the furthest distance travelled on a single tank, was set in 2002 The record was set in a Peugeot 406 HDi which travelled - 2,348km (Melbourne to Rockhampton) on a single 70 litre tank of fuel.

Peugeot car sets Australian record for fuel efficiency-Guinness Book of Recors. The second record, was originally set in 2004 and then beaten in 2008, and was for overall round-Australia fuel economy.

On the 2004 trip, a 307 Touring 1.6 HDi travelled a distance of 14,634km at an average of 3.49 l/100km. Four years later, a 308 1.6 HDi covered the amazing distance of 14,580km travelled at an average of just 3.13 l/100km. These are amazing figures, and show what can be achieved in ideal driving conditions, with efficient diesel engines.

New-Generation Peugeot 508 Hybrid4

The latest release, announced this month for European customers, is the third diesel-electric hybrid Peugeot 508 HYbrid4- the sedan version. It joins the crossover and station wagon already on the market.

The 508 boasts better-than-Prius fuel economy, in a well-appointed, large family sedan. That's quite a feat, and it would be great to see it in Australia.

The Peugeot 508 HYbrid4's Not For Australia- Yet

However, while Peugeot Australia confirmed the local division’s interest in the 508 HYbrid4, the sedan is yet to complete their hot-weather testing. Until that process is complete, Peugeot Australia is not in a position to make any decisions about importing the car, or speculate on timing.

The 508 Hybrid4 makes use of a 2.0-litre HDi diesel engine delivering 161hp (163PS) that powers the front wheels and a 36hp (37PS) electric motor driving the rear wheels.

As reported in CarScoop, the system produces a combined output of 197hp (200PS) and offers a choice of four driving modes including 100 percent electric (ZEV), 4WD, Auto and Sport that can be selected through a four-way rotary switch on the centre console.

The 508's Better Than Prius- 3.6l/100km- Fuel Economy

According to the French manufacturer, the 508 Hybrid4 Sedan returns a combined fuel consumption of just 3.6lt/100km (65.3mpg US or 78.5mpg UK) with corresponding CO2 emissions of only 95g/km.

It can reach 100km/h (62mph) from standstill in 9.0 seconds and continue to accelerate until 209km/h (130mph).

Now we just have to 'hurry up and wait' to see the Peugeot 508 HYbrid4 in Australia!
