Wombey: Canberra Sustainable Design Architect
Russell
is a sole practitioner and for most of his career has worked on
residential projects in and around the ACT. Projects include Greenfields,
redevelopment and alterations and additions.
Russell
is committed to the principles of designing for our local climate
using natural energy systems for heating, cooling and incorporating
other sustainable technologies. He started designing energy efficient
homes in the early 1970's and was active in the formation of energy
efficient design principles for this region. In 1976, he designed
and constructed a solar passive family home in the Canberra suburb
of Kambah, which was highly regarded within the industry as a benchmark
for Australian Solar Passive Design.
Having
worked in the construction industry, he has developed an understanding
of the cost implications of design decisions. His fundamental design
approach is to develop a close relationship with the client to develop
design solutions that not only reflect his professional experience,
but also balances the site characteristics with the client's budget,
accommodation wishes and preferred aesthetics. Consequently, each
project is unique resulting in a body of work that includes a variety
of architectural solutions whilst still reflecting responsible sustainable
design principles.
