Solar
(PV) Rebates: What Should You Do?
We
can make this as complicated as possible, or boil the information
down to some pretty simple advice...
1.
If you qualify under the current Means Test for the $8,000
Rebate... move quickly! The current scheme finishes
on June 30th, 2009. We're not sure yet how it will close off, so
acting quickly makes sense. On a 1 kW system you'll receive a total
rebate (including RECs) of around $8,900* NOW, but only around $4500*
after June 30th. Waiting too long will cost you over $4000, so call
us NOW.
2.
If you DON'T qualify under the current Means Test, then you want
to purchase from July 1st,. 2009 under the new Solar
Credits rebate scheme. On a 1 kW system you would receive
a rebate of around $900* NOW, but around $4500* from July 1st. On
a 1.5 kW system, you would receive around $1350* now, but around
$6750* from July 1st.
There
is obviously going to be a rush of activity. There aren't going
to be enough good installers or enough stock of good brands of panels
to keep up with a double burst of activity- the rush of customers
wanting to get the $8000 that closes on June 30th., and the queue
of those waiting to buy after July 1st. Please help us help you
by talking to us as soon as possible.

You'll notice that the figures we use are a little less than the
Government quotes on it's handouts. That's because there are a few
qualifications. To quote from the Government's own Fact
Sheet on the subject...
"
Under the existing MRET scheme, a 1.5 kilowatt solar PV system
is eligible for RECs valued at around $1500. Under Solar Credits,
the household would receive five times that amount, or around
$7,500, depending on the market value
of the RECs. The exact level of subsidy will depend on a number
of factors, including the price of Renewable Energy Certificates
(RECs), the deeming period chosen by the applicant
(see above), the location of the solar PV system and the size
of the system." |
The
calculations by the government use a figure of $50 for RECs. Their
current retail market price is around $44-45. We use that figure
to be conservative. We want any surprises to be pleasant ones!
